Welcome to Mrs. G's Joy Team!
Dear friends and family,
Please join me for the Walk for Women's Wellness on May 6 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Kettering Medical Center. It will be the most joyful event for spring 2018!
To register, go to kmcfoundation.org and join Mrs. G’s JOY Team.
By walking a simple mile together, we can raise crucial funding to help underserved women in the Dayton area receive lifesaving breast cancer screenings and services through the help of the Women’s Wellness Fund. Last year’s Walk was amazing! We had the biggest team and the most team spirit. With every step we pledged to make our community a place for women to beat breast cancer. I look forward to even more of you joining me on the walk this year.
The Walk begins at 1:00 p.m. So there’s plenty of time before and after the walk to enjoy all of the special booths and events. It’s truly a family event with something for everyone!
Start by adding your personal message to the powerful Prayer Wall. Then visit the unique vendor mall for one-of-a kind items and gifts. You can purchase raffle tickets from the Men in Pink, including my husband Al and son-in-law Brian, along with Dayton’s Handsomest Men who have joined in the fight against breast cancer. Bid on the silent auction items (feeling’ lucky?). Register for door prizes and let the kiddos enjoy face painting and the bounce house! You can watch KMC Robot Interactions! Meet my dear friend and Honorary Chairman for 2018, the incredible Kim Faris from I Heart Radio Mix 107.7. There will be delicious food trucks, an informative Health Fair, tours of the Cancer Center Pavilion and yes, back by popular demand are the fabulous Physician Talks, cooking demonstrations and Exercise and Fitness sessions to help women learn how to kick cancer and live joyfully.
I’m the first to tell you that annual breast cancer screening is important for every woman on the planet. It literally saved my life. Many of you already know my story because you helped me through my journey. It all started on the morning of August 25, 2015, “picture day” at my school. I spent a little more time putting myself together since I knew that the photo would come back to haunt me in the yearbook. But I didn’t even make it to the photographer that day. I received THE CALL that changed my life forever shortly after the first bell rang. ”Your mammogram doesn’t look right. Please come to the hospital now”.
In one morning I had gone from primping for a school picture to needing a medical team to help me fight for my life. I called my dear friend Pam and told her. She listened to my fears and said 5 powerful words: “We’ll get through this together”.
I think of that day often, but more importantly the months that followed when I experienced the love and support of my family, friends and the outpouring of kindness from the faculty, administration and students of Spring Valley Academy. I’m so thankful for the “food train”, beautiful cards and flowers, friends who drove me to appointments, neighbors who helped me walk up and down the street to build up my strength, the SVA Choir singing Christmas carols in my front yard and the young men from SVA who planted 100 tulips in my front yard. And of course, I’m extremely grateful to the wonderful doctors and nurses at KMC who took me apart and put me back together and have continued to aid me on my journey. In addition, being honored as the Honorary Chairman of the Ribbon of Hope Gala in the fall was a glorious celebration of being healthy and hopeful for other women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Beating breast cancer takes courage and faith. Without friends and family surrounding me with love and support it would have been a tough, lonely and scary journey. They helped me maintain my mantra: "Cancer will not steal my JOY”. Therefore, they are all honorary founding members of an extraordinary care-giving army - Mrs. G’s JOY TEAM. I’ll be forever grateful for those who made my path smooth and full of daily JOY.
I was fortunate to be diagnosed early by my annual mammogram. It literally saved my life. Thanks to my JOY TEAM and my amazing medical team I’m thrilled to say that today I’m cancer free. That’s nearly 900 days of JOY if you do the math. Yes, there are scars, but I’ve learned that scars can be beautiful. A scar means the hurt is over. It takes courage, but we can all get there if we have someone to help us to be brave. As I imagine Day One of a breast cancer diagnosis through the eyes of someone who doesn’t have insurance, can’t afford a mammogram or surgery, nor has transportation to go for the treatment they need to survive sounds terrifying. No one should face it alone.
The Women’s Wellness Fund is the answer to prayer for so many women who desperately need help to get well and stay well. It is wonderful to hear their stories of how a great burden was lifted from these brave women’s shoulders and they were able to make it through those challenging days. It made me even more adamant about my pledge to help others keep their JOY by assuring that financial concerns are never part of breast health.
This is your personal invitation from my grateful heart to join MRS. G’S JOY TEAM! Bring your family, friends, classmates, soccer team, Mom’s Group, workout partners, walking group, co-workers, book club buddies, Girl’s Night Out Gang, Golf Foursome, volleyball team, Stroller Moms and Bunko Babes to Kettering Medical Center and walk with me to celebrate all the women in our lives who have survived breast cancer and honor those who are no longer with us.
Register today at KMCfoundation.org, join Mrs. G’s Joy Team and meet me at the starting line. I’ll be there with a big hug and colorful lei for each of you to wear. Pick up your purple event t-shirt at the Mrs. G’s Joy Team table just inside the Registration area. Wear a fun, bright colored hat and your coolest sunglasses.
If you can’t walk with us, please consider giving a donation. Anything to help us reach our goal of helping others is appreciated. And if you know someone recently diagnosed with breast cancer that needs help, please tell them to contact KMCFoundation.org. Perhaps you can take them a meal, drive them to an appointment or reach out in another way to show you care.
Please come and be a part of this incredibly joyful day. The only requirement is that you have the desire to be that beacon of light, hope and support for those fighting breast cancer. If we work together we can tell the next woman who receives that scary diagnosis those amazing words my friend told me nearly 900 days ago: “We’ll get through this together.”
See you at the starting line!
Taking steps to bring JOY to others,
Mrs. G’s JOY Team
